Avenged Sevenfold is a heavy metal band from California (often abbreviated to A7X) based in Huntington Beach, consisting of M. Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance, Johnny Christ and Mike Portnoy. It replaces The Reverend, a former drummer who died Dec. 28 20091. The group has long been a mainstay of the underground scene in California before moving to a more "commercial " and to experience success with the album City of Evil and Avenged Sevenfold eponymous album. They are considered part of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal (by analogy with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and reached second place in the top 10 best bands of the decade published by Ultimate Guitar2, leaving the first place Metallica.
